Jenks West 5th graders "Fight the Bite"

5th graders at Jenks West Intermediate are learning how life is different for children in Ghana, West Africa.  The project "Fight the Bite" has gained district-wide interest as the students explore more about the daily life, culture, and health concerns of Ghanaian people. The Jenks Board of Education will visit the school later in the month and tour the students' displays.  A mosquito net hangs in the hallway of 5th grade pod along with large displays charting various areas of interests.

Along with addressing the challenges of life in Ghana, the students and teachers have adopted a mission.  They are partnering with Kairos 10 International Fund to send mosquito nets to children and families in Ghana.  Through a t-shirt campaign, "Fight the Bite" shirts were designed and then sold with the price of a net included.

The "Fight the Bite" project will continue the next three weeks as the students and their parents will have the opportunity to purchase Kairos 10 products through a special store set up in the administrative offices of JWI.  The students will then send nets, soccer balls, and "Fight the Bite" shirts with a group traveling to Ghana in January.

The campaign will conclude with a visit from Bishop Odai of Maranatha Power Ministries.  Bishop Odai plans to thank students and teachers along with answering questions about daily life in his country.   The students and teachers of JWI will present Bishop Odai with a net total at that time.
